Songs for Every Season: A Study of the Psalms

Sundays at Village Church | June 15 - July 20, 2025

Sermon Introduction – Songs for Every Season

We all walk through seasons — some marked by joy and peace, others by pain, doubt, and waiting. In every circumstance, we face the same question: How do we relate to God both in times of gladness and seasons of grief?

This is where the Psalms so powerfully meet us.

John Calvin called the Psalms “an anatomy of all the parts of the soul,” noting that there is not an emotion anyone will experience that is not reflected in this book. The Psalms are like a mirror for our hearts — held up before the face of our holy God.

They remind us that we are not alone.

In joy, they teach us to praise.

In sorrow, they give us permission to lament.

In doubt, they call us to trust.

In waiting, they help us endure.

Charles Spurgeon powerfully described their lasting power:

“God permitted David to go through many experiences, not so much for himself as for the good of succeeding generations. Whenever we look into David’s psalms, we may somewhere or other see ourselves. I never get into a corner, but I find David in that corner...I never climbed so high that I could not find that David was up above me, ready to sing his song upon his stringed instrument, even as I could sing mine.”

Over the next six weeks, we’ll explore six of these divinely inspired songs and see that no matter where you are, you can turn to God’s Word and find truth to guide, steady, and lead you into a life of flourishing.
