In a culture that often avoids commitment, meaningful church membership is a joyful and biblical response to God’s design for the local church. It is more than attending services — it is a shared life marked by covenant, care, and mission.
At Village Church, we believe membership is:
Biblical – Rooted in the New Testament vision for the local church
Covenantal – A mutual commitment between believers and their church family
Missional – A call to actively participate in the work of the gospel
Why Church Membership Matters
The Biblical Foundation for Church Membership
While the word "membership" is not used directly in Scripture, the concept is clearly modeled in the early church:
Paul teaches that every believer has a necessary role in the local church. Membership reflects the unity and diversity of the body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:12-27 - “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”
The writer of Hebrews presupposes a defined group of believers under the shepherding care of elders — a relationship of responsibility and accountability.
Hebrews 13:17 - “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls...”
The early church was a committed and identifiable community characterized by worship, generosity, and shared life.
In Acts 2:41-47, new believers were baptized, added to the church, and devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, and prayer.
